This paper presents several case studies of metropolitan areas that have used regional visioning initiatives as a means of integrating long-range transportation and land use planning. Projects in Portland, Oregon; the Greater Wasatch Area of Utah; Charlottesville, Virginia; Sacramento, California; and Oregon’s Southern Willamette Valley are described, focusing on the public engagement process, scenario development and evaluation, and implementation through long-range transportation plans and other actions. The paper concludes with an analysis of common features and limitations of this approach, and the extent to which it may be transferable to Chittenden County, Vermont.

Subsequent to the release of the September 2000 forecasts, the United States Bureau of the Census released individual town population data taken from the 2000 decennial census. The release of these data, provide additional insight into recent county and town level growth patterns. The new data have been incorporated into these population updates.

Regional Indicators: Measuring Our Progress Toward Chittenden County’s 20-Year Transportation Goals

This report reviews the 1997 long-range transportation plan by evaluating progress towards satisfying 19 of its sub-goals. For each of these goals, progress is gauged based on an assessment of specific measures and actions. A Progress Indicator describes whether the trend has been positive (+), negative (-) or mixed (+/-). Progress indicators are discussed and summarized by the general planning area.
